Small Sewing Machines

Small Sewing Machines

thinking small

J:   Linda, can you tell me a little about small sewing machines. What are the advantages?

L:   Joan, small sewing machines are great for taking to quilting and sewing classes because the large machines can be very heavy. They only weigh around 12 lbs which makes them ideal to take to classes and workshops. They are also perfect for travel.

J:    Are they worth the extra expense though?

L:   There are a variety of models available in a price range that will suit everybody. The mechanical models are the least expensive but they also offer the least in features. Usually they will offer basic straight, zig-zag and reverse stitching.

There are also a couple of electronic models available that offer a lot more features, but they also cost more. These types of machines generally offer all the features of a larger machine but in a smaller package.

With quilting classes becoming more versatile, these little machines perform very well indeed.

that size thing again

Small Sewing Machines With the smaller machines, you must realize that the bedspace is very small compared to a larger machine, although you can usually purchase an extension table which gives you a little more room to work.

All things considered, a portable sewing machine is a great addition to your sewing room and for taking to class. They are definitely a useful tool for a quilter.

J:    Thanks Linda, you’ve been really helpful. I’m off now to decide on a new machine … or two maybe … then I think I’m going to take some classes. Maybe you can give me the low-down on what to expect at a quilting class, I’ve never been to one.

L:   That would be my pleasure Joan. See you later !
